Poltergeist

The term, compounded from the German poltern, ‘to knock', and geist, ‘spirit', is applied to a variety of invisible entities which manifest in an unruly and disturbing manner, often involving unexplained noises, the moving or throwing of objects, vile smells, strange shrieks, as well as such curious phenomena as apports. While some occurrences may appear to involve actual spirits or ghosts, the disturbances may also derive from subconscious psychokinesis on the part of an individual.

Poltergeist phenomena have been reported around the world throughout history. Before the nineteenth century, these occurrences were blamed on the Devil, demons and witches. In the 1930s the psychologist and psychic researcher Nandor Fodor suggested the theory that poltergeist disturbances were caused not by spirits but by individuals suffering intense repressed anger, sexual frustration, and hostility. This psychological dysfunction theory has been supported by other research indicating that in a significant number of reported disturbances, the agent was a child or teenager possibly unconsciously unleashing hostility without fear of punishment. Psychological profiles of agents show that mental and emotional stress, personality disorders, phobias, obsessive behavior and schizophrenia are linked to supposed poltergeist phenomena, and in some cases psychotherapy has eliminated the poltergeist disturbances.

Earth Divination Earth Magic: A Practical Guide to Geomancy
by John Michael Greer

Earth Divination Earth Magic: A Practical Guide to Geomancy.

John Michael Greer has done something original with this book. It is truly great. He presents to the reader a very antiquated but very easy form of divination that has been practised little since the Rennaisance. He takes much of his information from bits and pieces of essays that survived the big Witch Persecution. If you are looking for an accurate form of divination that is very easy to use this book could teach you a lot and is simple enough that if you have no prior information in the occult you will still have no problem learning it.

The Book of Divination
by Ann Fiery

The Book of Divination

In The Book of Divination the histories and descriptions of 15 systems of divination are overviewed from a pop cultural perspective by researcher Ann Fiery. In terms dismissive of her subject area (the first illustration is a reproduction of a painting of fortunetellers picking the pocket of a rich man), Fiery touches upon astrology, metoposcopy (the science of forehead lines), oracles, numerology, oneiromancy (dream reading), phrenology (the study of head shapes), alchemy, tasseomancy (tea leaf reading), runes, haruspicy (reading the entrails of animals), talismans, chiromancy (palmistry), geomancy, rhabdomancy (dowsing), and tarot in her wide sweep. The shining gold cover, fine bindery, handsome illustrations, and interior graphic design also make this an attractive work of bookmaking art.

The I Ching or Book of Changes
by C.F. Baynes

The I Ching or Book of Changes

More than just a translation, Richard Wilhelm's I Ching is a profound introduction to the Chinese world-view. The I Ching (Yi Jing) is recognized by both Confucians and Taoists as a foundational work, and Wilhelm shows why. He separates his work into three books. The first book is about the hexagrams -- the meanings of the lines and Wilhelm's extensive comments. The second presents two early commentaries that interpret the wisdom of the divinatory text, also with Wilhelm's helpful notes. And the third book takes us back to the hexagrams for more detailed commentary from both ancient Chinese thinkers and Wilhelm. Wilhelm is able to offer such enormous assistance because he spent the better part of a decade in China studying under classically trained scholars. His love for the work is thus as broad as his understanding. The I Ching was originally used for divination, kind of like palm reading or interpreting the stars. It differs from simple prognostication, however, in that it demands us, as diviners, to cultivate an understanding of the world and ourselves. Without this understanding, the text is useless, hence the value of the commentaries, particularly Wilhelm's. This version is not without its biases, of course -- it is a European's understanding of the I Ching, through a late-Qing dynasty Confucian perspective, translated into English by a Jungian psychoanalyst. Nonetheless, it succeeds like no other.

The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination
by Robert Place

The Tarot : History, Symbolism, and Divination

This may be the best book ever written on that deck of cards decorated with mysterious images called the tarot. Dozens of books provide sketchy information on the cards' history and evolution before turning more discursive on how to interpret them. Place inverts that formula. Well-researched, entertainingly written chapters begin the book with information on where the tarot comes from and how it gained so much prominence as a tool for divination. Far from developing from deeply magical sources, as many have claimed, the tarot was originally just a deck of cards used for playing games. Even at the start, however, those games included some fortune-telling. Over the course of centuries, the cards' lore was enriched by thoughtful practitioners who added cards, elaborated their meanings, and connected their imagery to mythology and dreams. At the beginning of the twentieth century, an inspired young artist, Pamela Smith, drew upon her occult training and her own visions to create the now classic Rider-Waite deck. In a comprehensively researched and passionately argued chapter, Place restores Smith to her rightful position as the genius behind the deck. That Place also offers excellent guidance to actually reading the cards makes the book that much more appealing, as a how-to as well as a why-bother. Highly recommended.

Dowsing for Beginners: How to Find Water, Wealth and Lost Objects
by Richard Webster

Dowsing for Beginners: How to Find Water, Wealth and Lost Objects

You look around at the anxious faces. They''re all counting on you. In your hands you hold the two short ends of a Y-shaped stick. Slowly, you start to walk around a field. Suddenly, the stick begins to move, seemingly of its own accord. The tip of the stick is pulled down and the stick bends until you think it might break. When you finally find the point with the strongest pull you say, "Here. Dig here." A few hours later, a much-needed well is producing hundreds of gallons of water. In olden days this respected practice was known as "water witching." Today it is called dowsing, and the best way to learn this skill is with Richard Webster''s Dowsing for Beginners. By learning the techniques in this book you will open a doorway to personal growth, potential financial gain and spiritual development. Numerous techniques are given. They use simple objects like a forked stick or just your hand. The book is also filled with illustrations and photos that will allow you to see the correct way to use all of these techniques. Of course, you will be able to use these techniques to discover lost or hidden items. You will be able to find subterranean water, gold, and oil. You will also learn how to use these techniques to answer questions and even help you with potential health problems before they occur.

Zen Runes Kit: An Inspirational Combination of Rune Wisdom and Zen Insight

I know a lot of people tend to think that Runes are just Nordic, historically. But this set of runes is absolutely wonderful if you are interested in Zen or Asian philosophies. If you are a Nordic lover though, please do not try to merge the two as they each have their own unique backgrounds, it would be like comparing Europe to Asia. Each have their own beauty, myths, and mystery. But if you are just drawn into the field of Divination, keep an open mind with this wonderful set as it offers a different perpective than the average Western decks/rune sets.

Crystal Ball Gazing: The Complete Guide to Choosing and Reading Your Crystal Ball
by Uma Silbey

Crystal Ball Gazing: The Complete Guide to Choosing and Reading Your Crystal Ball

Charles Hapgood's rare book, Mystery in Acambaro, is back in print! Hapgood researched the Acambaro collection of clay figurines with Erle Stanley Gardner (author of the Perry Mason mysteries) in the mid-1960s. The Acambaro collection comprises hundreds of clay figurines that are apparently thousands of years old; however, they depict such bizarre animals and scenes that most archaeologists dismiss them as an elaborate hoax. The collection shows humans interacting with dinosaurs and various other "monsters" such as horned men. Both Hapgood and Gardner were convinced that the figurines from Acambaro were authentic ancient artifacts which indicated that men and dinosaurs had cohabited together in the recent past, and that dinosaurs had not become extinct many millions of years ago as is commonly thought. David Hatcher Childress writes a lengthy introduction concerning Acambaro, the latest testing and other evidence of "living" dinosaurs.
