Great Zimbabwe

Meaning "sacred house" in Bantu, it is the largest ancient stone construction south of the Sahara, covering nearly 1,800 acres composed of three distinct sets of ruins known as the Hill Complex, the Valley Complex, and the Great Enclosure.

Built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries by the ancestors of the Shona, one of Zimbabwe's many Bantu-speaking groups, Great Zimbabwe is made of dry masonry with stones shaped and fitted together with no mortar, but marvelously accurate, resembling the skill of the Inca builders of Peru. It is believed that at some point it may have had as many as 18,000 inhabitants.
