End of the World, The
An endlessly preached
notion that life as we know is about to be over with, by the means of some worldwide or
even universal cataclysmic event.
This concept is one of the most common in prophetic
literature, especially in the apocalyptical literature of Judaism and
Christianity.
The End of the World. The term can denote either the end of the physical
world (cosmos) or the end of the social order (aeon). The theological term
eschatology refers to teachings about the last things, (from the
Greek eschaton).
Eschatology includes a
consideration
not only of the destiny of the world but of the individual (death, judgment,
heaven, hell).
The most dramatic form of
eschatology is apocalypticism.
The apocalyptic vision views the world as essentially on a downward path. It
will soon reach such a negative state that divine powers will intervene and
bring the present order to an end.
Mythmakers equally tried to explain the
end of life and the world. The flood legends were one way of telling how the Earth was
once destroyed at least all life forms with the exception of a few survivors. In
some American Indian myths the end of the world recurred in a cycle, followed by a new
creation.
According to ancient
Aztec tradition, there had already been four destructions
of the world, and a fifth was expected. Each world was ruled by a sun whose vanishing
marked each ending. Some mythologies blamed such catastrophic ends of the world on human
wickedness.
The apocalyptical concept of the end of the world
and the
Antichrist figure
have analogies in pre-Christian religions, such as Iranian mythology of the
final conflict between Ahura Mazda and Ahriman. However, it is within the Jewish
and Christian traditions that apocalyptic enthusiasm has been most notable.

Occultopedia is the genuine article, the
original and the best internet index of the extraordinary and uncanny,
shamelessly copied by many, but never equaled. Online since the
early 90s at first in a free web space provider, and in 1997 finally
with its own domain name and hosting Occultopedia still is the
principal online resource for those looking for the unexplained, the
curious and the unusual. |
