De Loys
Ape
Controversial
cryptozoological case that took place near the Tarra River on the border of Venezuela
and Colombia in 1920.
Swiss geologist Francois de Loys was this
expedition's leader, hence De Loys Ape. According to his story, after an
arduous journey and many casualties (several men had
died), the remnants of the party set up camp near the Tarra River to
rest for a while. They were then suddenly attacked by two 5 ft tall ape-like
creatures, a male and a female, that waved branches menacingly at the
party, howling and screeching, and finally throwing their own dung at
the expedition members. In their defense, the party opened fire, and the
female was shot dead. The wounded male then retreated into the forest.
Upon
inspecting their victim, the men realized that it was something out of the ordinary. They proceeded
to sit its body on a crate, propping its head up with a stick, and
taking a photograph of the creature. On de Loys journal it was mentioned that
after that the animal was skinned, and its jaw bone and skull preserved.
These remains, perhaps too conveniently, were lost.
Nearly a decade went by before the controversial image was made public.
A friend of de Loys, George Montandon, after taking great interest on
the picture, published it in 1929, naming the creature "Ameranthropoides loysi".
Skeptics
and scientists were quick to launch an attack
on de Loys’s credibility and Montandon’s claims, calling the picture
a hoax, nothing more then a spider monkey with it’s tail hidden behind the crate upon
which it was
placed. Furthermore, there was nothing on the picture that could provide
a clear measure of the animal's size.
Yet others
thought that the height of the
creature was about five feet tall (the largest spider monkey ever
recorded was only three feet, seven inches tall), pointing out that most crates of the kind
displayed on the picture were 20 inches in height, thus providing a
reference to measure the creature's size. See Mono Grande,
